Eyes are the most fragile part of our body and
off course we see the through them. There are layers in our eyes which protect
them from harmful rays and dust. Cornea is the outermost layer in every human
eye, as it is the outermost layer it protects our eyes and let the light rays go
inside our eyes, also focuses the light on the retina.
When the outer layer which we call cornea
grows outwards and its shape gets changed, this condition of eye is called
Keratoconus disorder. The disorder affects the cornea of a human eye in which
the shape of cornea gets smoothly conical whereas the natural shape of cornea
is round like a half ball.
The affected patients have reported the
complaints about difficulty in reading books, writing, driving, watching
television etc. Some of the common causes
and symptoms of Keratoconus are mentioned
below.
Causes of Keratoconus: Previously, when medical science was not
established the way it is now, it was assumed that eye injuries or bacterial
reactions lead to this disease. But the result of latest researches through
advanced technology in medical science has proved that enzyme deficiency is the
root cause of Keratoconus which weakens the cornea resulting free radicals can
damage it. The effect of the damage is that much strong that it ruins the shape
of cornea and gives it a conical shape.
However, Most of the reported problems are
naturally genetic, it’s like if anyone of my parents was affected by
Keratoconus before my birth I am more likely to have this diseases. Excessive
rubbing of eyes, excessive exposure to sun, deliberate use of unsuited contact
lenses are less frequent causes.
Symptoms of Keratoconus: Common symptoms of the disorder are rubbing
eyes frequently, no time tears in eyes, bad night vision, strain on eyes,
blurred vision, pain in eyes, halo effects around vehicle lights while driving
etc.
The problem with the disease is that it
improves its dimension gradually and it takes much enough time to be
recognized. It doesn’t reflect its symptoms in early stages hence you may need
to visit eye care clinics to get a series of proper eye tests. If detected, the
cures are available. However, when it gradually develops itself, it will start
giving you problems in vision as the outer layer cornea will lose its natural
shape. Some other symptoms are long distance objects get distorted, ghost
images, double vision in one eye, light sensitivity in eyes etc.
It is not an easy task to perform Keratoconus treatment. It gets more difficult with the growing stages of the disorder. It can be easily cured when detected in early
stage; use of soft lenses would help. Some eye specialists also recommend eye
drop solutions especially made for Keratoconus patients, these drops contain
Riboflavin and natural vitamin which are greatly helpful in reducing the
conical shape of cornea to normal and providing better eye sight and health.
